Edisto Beach is a town in Colleton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 641 at the 2000 census. The town limits include only the coastal area of Edisto Island (the majority of the island's area is part of Charleston County, though the town itself is incorporated within Colleton).

Edisto Beach was originally settled by the Edisto Indians and was discovered by the Spanish in the late 16th century. Thereafter, commerce on the Island began to develop. Rice and indigo were the most common crops during the early settlement years. Later, significant cotton plantations were built and flourished. This industry, fueled by rich land owners and slaves, prospered until the Civil War.
Although the Union soldiers thereafter invaded Edisto and John's Islands, the Confederate forces were able to retain control of Charleston until 1865, very late in the War.
By the 1920s South Carolina residents began arriving to Edisto Island and Edisto Beach to build crude retreats. In those days, access to the island could be gained only at low tide by driving or riding across the marsh on beds of oyster shells.
Although most homes on the island were destroyed in the 1940s, Hurricane Hugo spared the island in 1989. It has since become a vacation destination with a section of the island recently purchased by Wyndham Resorts.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (9.79%) is water.
Edisto Beach State Park is located on the coast of South Carolina, 50 miles south of Charleston, near the town of Edisto Beach in Colleton County.

There were 691 people, 354 or 51.2% male, and 337 or 48.8% female, the population is most likely much higher, due to the fact that many residents do not include Edisto as there permit home. The median age was 63.4 years, the population under 5 years was 3 or 0.4%, 18 and under was 12 or 1.7%, 18 and over was 679 or 98.3%, and 65 and over was 287 or 41.5% of the population. There were 7 or NA% families with children residing in the town. The population density was 351.7 people per square mile (116.7/km²). There were 1,812 housing units, with 360 or 19.9% Occupied housing units, 317 or 88.1% Owner-occupied housing units, 43 or 11.9% long term Renter-occupied housing units, and 1,452 or 80.1% Vacation or other housing units. The racial Demographic was 657 or 95.1% White, 0 or 0% African American, 0 or 0% Native American and Alaska Native , 34 or 4.9% Asian, 0 or 0% from other races, and 0 or 0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0 or 0% of the population.
The median income for a household in the town was $78,750, and the median income for a family was $84,423. Males had a median income of $34,615 versus $48,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $53,809. About NA or 2.6% of families and NA or 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and NA or 2.8% of those age 65 or over.
The labor force was 325 or 47.4% (16 and older), and the Mean travel time to work in minutes was 20.1. The unemployed rate is 25 or 3.6% of the work force. Not in the labor force 360 or 52.6% (mostly retired people).
